A woman in Chandigarh started with one salon in the city centre. Now she runs branches in Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur, with a small spa at the main branch. Each branch manager orders from the same distributor. The products come with one bill per branch, and the owner pays them all.
In the wedding season, the Mohali branch is fully booked with brides and their families. It runs out of a popular colour shade and bridal lashes in the middle of a busy weekend. A stylist rushes to buy from a shop at a high price. The Panchkula branch, quieter that week, has both in its cupboard. At the same time, the Zirakpur branch's spending on colour is rising every month, and nobody can say whether it is busier, more generous with product, or losing it.
After the season, the owner looks at the distributor's bills. Product spending has gone up across all branches. Counter sales of shampoos and serums are steady at the city centre branch and almost nothing in Zirakpur. The back rooms hold facial kits from a launch that never took off. She knows money is leaking. She cannot say where.
